Sacred Heart Parish Umrongso

The dream of the Catholic community of Umrsongso to have a parish came to reality in the year 1989. The parish is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Fr. Mathew Thomas was the first parish priest and he worked tirelessly to bring up this centre. He had to face lot difficulties in the initial stages. The Umrongso area is being inhabited by the Karbis, the Dimasas, the Pnars, the Adivasis, the Garos and the Khelmas. The establishment of Sacred Heart School in the same year added to the growth and developments of North Cachar Hills. The Sacred Sisters joined the mission in the year 1990. The parish now has 26 Catholic villages with a Catholic population of 1930.
