St. Paul Parish Amkachi

St. Paul Parish Amkachi was established in 1989.  The Parish was curved out from Umswai Parish. It was till then functioning as a sub-centre of Umswai Parish. The population of Amkachi area is comprised of three major tribal groups, namely, the Karbis, the Tiwas and the Khasis Pnars. In the 1960s Rev. Fr. Michael Balawan, SDB, of happy memory, established a village school named St. Peter’s LP School, at Amkachi. It was then under Nongpoh Parish. On March 19th 1989 the SABS sisters came to stay here and began a dispensary. Then in the same year, Fr. Mathew Kadavunkal came here as its resident priest, as In-Charge of the centre. Later Fr. Quirinus Syiemlieh came as its First Parish Priest. Don Bosco School got established up to class VI. In 2007. Class VII was opened and in 2008 it was upgraded up to Class VIII with the intention of going ahead as a full fledged High School. Realizing the urgent need of sound education in the remote villages, we started 8 village schools.

In order to enhance development of the area a model farmed was started at the Centre known as “Amkachi Integrated Organic Farming Model (AIOFarM)” in June, 2006. The model farm comprises Food Processing Unit, Piggery Unit, Poultry Unit, Dairy Unit, Pineapple Garden, Ginger and Turmeric cultivation, Orchard (Mango & Orange), Vermi Compost and Herbal Garden.  DBS Mini Stadium was constructed and blessed on 30th October, 2008. The construction of Teachers’ Quarters, Open Stage and Basketball Court are going on. Now the people of other faith are very open to Christianity. The Catholic population is about 2,892. There is a Project named “Apaibiri” funded by NABARD for 500 families under Tribal Development Fund which is implemented with the help of Bosco Reach Out for the development of the Tribals.
